Project Background:
The Financial Access Initiative (FAI) at New York University, in collaboration with EA Consultants, is conducting the US Small Firm Diaries project. This research delves into barriers to growth for small firms in low-income neighborhoods, with a focus on minority- and women-led businesses. By analyzing both quantitative financial data and qualitative insights from interviews, the project aims to inform policies that foster inclusive economic growth and resilience across the U.S. small business landscape.
Job Type: 30-40 hours per week, 1099 contract
Compensation: $20-25 per hour commensurate with location and prior experience
Duration: 12-15 months
Position Overview: We are seeking a motivated and personable Part-Time Small Business Relationship Manager (RM) to conduct research on 10-15 small businesses over the next 15 months. This role is primarily remote and requires that at least 30 hours per week be worked during business hours, including potentially 3-4 hours on Saturdays. Most importantly, the work requires a commitment to maintaining friendly and supportive relationships with small business owners. The ideal candidate will have a background in small business operations, excellent customer service skills, and the ability to work independently.
Key Responsibilities:
· Small Business Participant Recruitment: Participate in the recruitment process of small businesses for research initiatives.
· Outreach and data collection: Conduct monthly outreach to collect financial information (Balance sheet, Profit and loss statement, statement of cash flows) and maintain ongoing communication with participating businesses.
· Interviews: Conduct in-depth interviews with small business owners every two months to gather insights and feedback.
· Documentation: Fill out forms and documentation with the information collected from businesses.
· Check-Ins: Conduct informal check-ins with businesses to foster relationships and address any concerns.
· Resource Sharing: Provide small business management resources to owners, enhancing their operational knowledge and capabilities.
· Peer Learning Sessions: Invite businesses to participate in peer learning sessions, facilitating engagement and collaboration among owners.
· Participation: Actively participate in peer learning sessions, contributing insights and fostering a supportive environment.
· Professional Growth: Engage in opportunities for professional development, including training on QuickBooks, leading peer learning sessions, and potential travel.
Qualifications:
· Experience owning or working for a small business.
· Strong customer service skills with a focus on relationship management.
· Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
· Working knowledge of Excel and/or Google sheets
· Home computer, WIFI and ability to check email and send emails daily
· Ability to work independently and manage time effectively in a remote setting.
· Strong work ethic and self-motivated approach to tasks.
· Familiarity with QuickBooks and bookeeping is a plus.
Reporting Structure:
- The Small Business Relationship Manager will report to a regional supervisor and will be required to check in twice daily.
- Participation in periodic training sessions and weekly meetings with the supervisor is mandatory.
