School Bus Driver

Job Summary:

The School Bus Driver is responsible for the safe operation of the school bus and for ensuring the safety of student passengers while meeting established bus schedules and following the policies and procedures of the School and adhering to the NYS Division of Motor Vehicles Guidelines for the operation of a School Bus.

Essential Functions:

Operates the school bus by assessing traffic and road conditions, monitors student behavior and other factors necessary to safely deliver student passengers to and from school and adhering to state laws and school district policies.

  • Transports students and teacher(s) on field trips to various locations; planning necessary route(s) and stops as needed
  • Communicates all route changes and hazards to the appropriate School Personnel.
  • Performs bus safety pre-trip inspections to ensure proper vehicle working condition(s). Maintains all safety equipment. Performs daily record keeping activities such as pre-trip inspection forms, route surveys and route maps.
  • Reports needed mechanical repairs when necessary. Services bus with diesel fuel, and oil; and when necessary, fills tires and batteries.
  • Performs post-trip inspection to check for vandalism, lost articles or sleeping students.
  • Responsible for ensuring the safety of all students entering and exiting the bus by stopping all traffic in accordance with state law.
  • Monitors student behavior and provides written reports for all incidents of misconduct to School Administration.
  • Maintains a safe and sanitary bus environment for students . Responsible to see that the exterior of the bus is washed and that the emergency lights are free of dirt and snow.
  • Responsible for registering the bus at a DMV location, taking the bus for DOT inspections and taking the bus to the mechanic for repairs if needed, following up and bringing the bus back to the school after repairs are made.

Job Requirements:

  • Must possess a NYS Driver’s License, NY State Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with an “S” endorsement
  • Pass a fingerprint and background clearance
  • A motor vehicle abstract will be obtained from the DMV yearly. All accidents or tickets must be reported to employer.
  • Driver has to perform emergency evacuation drills with all their students.
  • A Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR) must be used to keep an accurate account of bus information.
  • Driver must create and maintain a current list of their student passengers and directions for each of the routes.
  • Previous experience as a school bus driver preferred
  • Experience working with children preferred
  • Returns the bus to the assigned bus lot, performs a final inspection, and secures the bus according to procedures.

Pay: $24.00 per hour
